HOLOCAUST MYTHS - NAZI PAGANISM

by Alexander Kimel

A new Holocaust myth is being perpetrated. A myth that views Nazism as a pagan reaction against Christianity and therefore removing Christian historical responsibility for the silence and inaction during the Holocaust. I consider this myth an apologetic fallacy. My reasoning is as follows:

1. Nazism was indeed a pagan reaction but it affected only the small core of Nazi leadership, while the population at large remained Christian and practiced their religion without interference.

2. Religious persecutions, neither Christian nor pagan, did not cause the Holocaust. It was outcome of the insanity one man, Hitler, who saw in the Jews powerful enemies bent on destroying him.

3. Nevertheless, the killing of 6.5 million Jews dispersed over Europe was done in complete vacuum, without protests, help or concern. The churches and the Vatican were the only institutions that had enough power to either stop the carnage or at least mount rescue operations. Unfortunately, the majority of the churches remained silent while the carnage was going on. In countries where the clergy responded to the violence as in France, Denmark or Italy the people reacted positively and this is reflected in the survival rate of the Jews.

4. It is ironic that in the most religious counties the Jewish survival rates were the lowest. For example in Poland, Lithuania, Ukraine, Croatia, the survival rate is below five percent while France it is 75 percent.

Historical Responsibility
With the approaching Third Millennium it is time to look back and face the failures of our civilization squarely without the mythological patch. Historical Responsibility, means that all the institutions and people, that contributed through their silence and inaction to this tragedy, do have a moral responsibility to speak up. Mythological apologetics are not enough. Only the truth can set us free and save from future catastrophic violence.
